An eighteenth-century village pub has scooped a Guinness World Record – for selling the most varieties of gin.
The historic country inn stocks everything from gin garnished with seaweed to a speciality designed recipe for a top Copenhagen restaurant – featuring extract of ant.
Owner Philip Whiteman, 64, and his team have been stocking their bar full of the weird and wonderful flavours for more than a decade.
Philip has now developed his bar into a fully-fledged ‘Gin Emporium’ which now has its very own world record.
Old Bell Inn staff said their biggest inspiration has been their customers’ feedback.
Philip said: “It’s incredible to think that we have produced something that is unique in the world.”
“We have accomplished something great that our customers can enjoy.”
Business development manager Natalee Goas said customers are now motivating the team to expand their emporium even further.
“We want to create an all-round experience for our customers,” said Natalee, 28.
The Saddleworth pub has won the Guinness World Record for most varieties of gin
“From a staff point of view we have had a lot of training and that’s important to us. The history of gin is fascinating and it’s such a versatile drink.
“It’s really interesting and we try and pass all this knowledge onto our customers. We have many varieties from all over, customers can literally travel the world and not leave the bar.”
Now the world record certificate, which boasts the official title ‘the most varieties of gin commercially available’, will be proudly displayed above the emporium.
And as well as continuing to develop their already well-stocked bar – where all the gins are topped with juniper berries, gin’s predominant flavour – staff are now planning to get customers even more involved.
“We’ve started doing monthly gin master classes,” said Natalee.
“We’ve made it an evening of gin tasting because we want everyone to get to know all about our different gins. We want to try and make the Old Bell Inn a destination place for gin.”
